The embroidery is based on the illustration "Aesculus Hippocastanum // Horse Chesnut" by English artist Mary Delaney, known for her botanical paper mosaics. She created illustrations of flowers on a black background with tissue paper. Delany's collection of nearly a thousand exquisite works is held in the British Museum.
